Visual Art Community Classes

The Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts in excited to offer a number of visual arts program for students of all ages to explore and create within the visual arts realm.

Students will be instructed by the very talented Kritsana Naowakhun, a fine arts professional who was born and raised in Bangkok Thailand and was educated at Silpakorn University, one of the most prestigious fine arts Universities in Thailand. He arrived in Canada in 2011 and has dedicated himself full-time to pursue his dreams of creating and inspiring others through visual art.

2020 Spring Art Classes-ONLINE!

Registration is now closed.

Classes started the week of May 4, 2020
$35/person

Classes Offered:
  • Mondays and Wednesdays (6pm-8pm) will be dedicated to advanced youth (14+) and adults concentrating on landscapes
  • Tuesday and Thursdays (3pm-5pm) will be for children 6-13 and the focus will be on animals and characters! Please note: those 13+ may join this class if they are interested in the subject matter!)
  • Length of Program: 8 weeks (ending the week of June 22nd)
    Platform: Google Meet: Prior to the classes, a link will be emailed to you so you can join the class. I will be available online the first week to ensure everyone gets connected. PLEASE NOTE: You may have to check your junk mail for the link if your computer does not recognize it.
    Picking up canvases
    As per usual, all students will be provided canvases (2 per student per week-16 total) to paint on. These can be picked up from the Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts on the following dates:
    • Friday May 1: 10:00am-1:00pm
    • Saturday May 2: 11:00am-2:00pm
    The following procedures will be in place to ensure we are complying with COVID-19 restrictions:
    • We ask that only 1 member from the household come to SECPA (230 Powder Drive) to pick up
    • A desk will be set up down the hall from the front entrance
    • People are to enter at the front of the building and then exit to the side (directional signage will be provided)
    • If a line up forms, people will be asked to stand on the taped markers on the floor to maintain physical distance
    • Hand sanitizers will be available upon entrance and exit
    • Anyone showing signs of being ill with flu-like symptoms will NOT be permitted access. Please be respectful.

REGULAR COMMUNITY ART CLASSES

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

Mondays
Adult Art Club 18+

This art club is open to participants 18+ who have a love for art and a desire to share time and space with others of the same mindset. All levels are welcome, including beginner level. Students will gather to share ideas and beginners will learn basic foundational art skills and new techniques in painting, drawing, sculpture, and mixed media. They will then apply their skills working independently creating art pieces in the subject and medium of choice while interacting with other artists and receiving mentorship by Kritsana. Adults are encouraged to use this time to relax, socialize, draw inspiration from their fellow artists and explore their creative potential.

Tuesdays
Child Art 102: Advanced Art Concepts
Ages 8-12

Students who already have strong foundational art skills and basics in painting and drawing are encouraged to take this class.  There are two options for students in this class:

  1. Students can work independently to develop their own vision and style and are given leveled subject matter to further develop their skills and creativity.
  2. Students can choose to follow the instructor on a step-by-step project to further develop and master technical skills.

Students who take this class must have been previously enrolled in the child beginner class or must be approved by the instructor and provide examples of their work.

Wednesdays
Little Palettes: Ages 6-7

One of our most popular classes! Students ages 6-7 can now learn and explore foundational and basic art skills in painting and drawing. They will learn how to properly hold and control paint and drawing utensils, how to create simple and complex forms  and will be guided through realistic subjects and forms while discovering their own artistic style. This is a great opportunity for young artists to develop a love for the craft and meet new art friends!

Wednesdays
Child Art 101: Foundational Techniques Ages 8-12

This class is open for all students and will focus on learning basic art skills through drawing and painting. Students will follow along with the instructor step-by-step in order to fine tune important habits and learn foundational skills and fundamental techniques. The instructor will select the subject matter and will work alongside the students to encourage them to become more competent in basic skills which will allow them to create their own subject matter in future classes.

Thursdays
Youth Art & Social Club: Ages 12-17

Students explore their individual style while continuing to build a strong foundation of art skills. Students who come to this class socialize with other art enthusiasts while challenging themselves to dive deeper into their subjects of choice. This class is for students who are passionate about art and wish to further develop a strong art portfolio. Students must be invited to take this class by previous enrollment or approved by showing Kritsana examples of their work.

Fridays
Youth Art 101 & 102: Intro to Art Fundamentals & Advanced Art Concepts (Combined Class) Ages 12-17

Advanced students who already have strong foundational art skills and basics in painting and drawing are encouraged to take this class.  Students will develop their own vision and style by choosing their own medium and subject of interest.

Beginner students will learn and explore foundational and basic art skills in painting and drawing. Students will be guided through realistic subjects and forms while discovering their own artistic style.

Saturdays
Child Art 102: Advanced Art Concepts Ages 8-12

REGULAR WINTER, SPRING & FALL PROGRAM SUPPLY LIST

All students are required to bring their own supplies (except canvases, which are included with your registration):

  • Primary paint set (black, white, red, yellow, blue)-Amsterdam, Windsor & Newton, Liquidex are recommended brands

  • Paint brush set (ensure to purchase at least a #12, #6, #2 and #1 for sizes)

  • Drawing board with clips (something to fit 16 x 20 canvas paper)

  • Flat tray or Rubbermaid container for mixing paint (a cookie sheet works very well!)

  • Pencils , 2 each of HB and 8b
  • 1-2 Erasers
  • Kitchen towel to clean paint brushes
  • Ruler

Students in the Intro to Landscape Painting class:
A stretched canvas will be provided to you for your first class. After that, you are welcome to use the canvas paper provided OR you are invited to purchase stretched canvas frames if you wish to create “ready to hang” artwork.
