Visual Art Classes

The Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts is excited to offer a number of visual arts programs for students of all ages to explore and create within the visual arts realm.

Students will be instructed by the very talented Kritsana Naowakhun, a fine arts professional who was born and raised in Bangkok Thailand and was educated at Silpakorn University, one of the most prestigious fine arts Universities in Thailand. He arrived in Canada in 2011 and has dedicated himself full-time to pursue his dreams of creating and inspiring others through visual art.

REGULAR COMMUNITY ART CLASSES (Winter, Spring and Fall)

The Fall art session will start the week of September 18, 2023
Registration for current students will open August 4 at 10:00am, and to the public on August 8 at 10:00am.

Important: Child Art 102 and the Youth Art Club are only open to returning students. If you have not taken art classes with us in the past, you MUST register for the 101 sessions. These classes will fill up fast, so please register early!

 

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

Adult Art Club 18+
Mondays

This art club is open to participants 18+ who have a love for art and a desire to share time and space with others of the same mindset. All levels are welcome, including beginner level. Students will gather to share ideas and beginners will learn basic foundational art skills and new techniques in painting, drawing, sculpture, and mixed media. They will then apply their skills working independently creating art pieces in the subject and medium of choice while interacting with other artists and receiving mentorship by Kritsana. Adults are encouraged to use this time to relax, socialize, draw inspiration from their fellow artists and explore their creative potential.

Child Art 102: Advanced Art Concepts
Ages 8-12
Tuesdays and Saturdays

Students who already have strong foundational art skills and basics in painting and drawing are encouraged to take this class.  There are two options for students in this class:

  1. Students can work independently to develop their own vision and style and are given levelled subject matter to further develop their skills and creativity.
  2. Students can choose to follow the instructor on a step-by-step project to further develop and master technical skills.

Students who take this class must have been previously enrolled in the child beginner class or must be approved by the instructor and provide examples of their work.

Child Art 101: Learning the Basics & Foundational Techniques
Ages 8-12
Wednesdays and Saturdays

This class is open to beginner students and will focus on learning basic art skills through drawing and painting. Students will follow along with the instructor step-by-step in order to fine tune important habits and learn foundational skills and fundamental techniques. The instructor will select the subject matter and will work alongside the students to encourage them to become more competent in basic skills which will allow them to create their own subject matter in future classes.

Youth Art & Social Club
Ages 14-17
Thursdays

Students explore their individual style while continuing to build a strong foundation of art skills. Students who come to this class socialize with other art enthusiasts while challenging themselves to dive deeper into their subjects of choice. This class is for students who are passionate about art and wish to further develop a strong art portfolio. Students must be invited to take this class by previous enrollment or approved by showing Kritsana examples of their work.

Youth Art 101 & 102: Intro to Art Fundamentals & Advanced Art Concepts (Combined Class)
Ages Ages 12-17
Friday

Advanced students who already have strong foundational art skills and basics in painting and drawing are encouraged to take this class.  Students will develop their own vision and style by choosing their own medium and subject of interest.

Beginner students will learn and explore foundational and basic art skills in painting and drawing. Students will be guided through realistic subjects and forms while discovering their own artistic style.

Little Palettes  
Ages 6-7
Saturdays

Students ages 6-7 can now learn and explore foundational and basic art skills in painting and drawing. They will learn how to properly hold and control paint and drawing utensils, how to create simple and complex forms  and will be guided through realistic subjects and forms while discovering their own artistic style. This is a great opportunity for young artists to develop a love for the craft and meet new art friends!

    High quality paint brushes may come in a set, but if purchased individually ensure to get a #12, #6, #2 and #1 for sizes.

  • Drawing Board
    with clips (something to fit 16 x 20 canvas paper)

  • Sketch Book

  • Flat Tray
    or low-sided Rubbermaid container for mixing paint (a cookie sheet works very well!)

  • Pencils , 2 each of HB and 8b

  • Kitchen towel to clean paint brushes

REFUNDS & CANCELLATIONS

Notice of cancellation* must be submitted in writing to: secpa@fmcsd.ab.ca.
Cancellations received 7 days prior to the class will be eligible for a refund. A $50.00 processing fee will be charged on all refunds.
No refunds will be given for notifications received less than 7 days prior to the commencement of classes.

*Non-attendance of any class is not considered notification of cancellation.
