Registration is NOW OPEN! Please click HERE to register!

NORTHERN LIGHTS! CAMERAS! ACTION! is an educational workshop series developed and instructed by M’GUPHYNN MEDIA. Geared for students aged 14-17*, this program provides hands-on education covering film techniques that transition videos into films!

Three individual workshops will be offered covering the following topics:
(1) SCENE COVERAGE, (2) SHOOTING DIALOGUE, and (3) MONTAGE USE.

Students attending each workshop are invited to submit homemade films showing the use of their newly acquired skills at an end of the month public screening held at the Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts where the best publicly judged submission will be awarded exciting film prizes!

Participants have the option to sign up for just one workshop or to take advantage of all 3! Given that the workshops naturally build on one another, a package price is offered for those who wish to take advantage of the full educational experience!

1-Workshop & Screening Series: $75.00/person
3-Workshop & Screening Series Package: $175.00/person

The Workshops (10:00am-2:00pm)
Each workshop will focus on an easy-to-learn essential skill for emerging filmmakers to execute in class. At the end of each workshop, M’Guphynn Media will present a film challenge to attendees related to the
workshop topic. Attendees will be invited to make their own films using this new skill.

The Screenings (7:00pm-9:00pm)
A screening of entries from each workshop will be hosted by M’Guphynn Media and showcased at the Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts in front of a live audience! Films will be judged and awarded for best technical implementation of the workshop skills taught and the best entertainment value.

Event & Dates Workshop Description
Scene Coverage:
Workshop: September 18
Screening: October 22

Students will be educated in proper framing for scene coverage including Master, Medium and Close-Up Shots. Students will participate in shooting an example of what a scene coverage looks like.

Class will end with the first screening challenge! Students must film their own scene showing examples of all shots used for proper scene coverage. A public challenge for filmmakers not taking the workshop will also be promoted via You Tube ahead of the screening on October 22.

Shooting Dialogue:
Workshop: October 23
Screening: November 20

Students will be educated in proper methods to shoot dialogue and will be versed in “the rules” around shooting dialogue with 2 or more actors (as well as how to break those rules to add dramatic effect to dialogue scenes!)

Class will end with the second screening challenge! Students must film their own dialogue scene. A public challenge for filmmakers not taking the workshop will also be promoted via You Tube ahead of the screening on November 20.

Montage:
Workshop: November 27
Screening: December 18

Students will be educated in filming Montage without dialogue.
What is Montage you ask?
It is the process or technique of selecting, editing, and piecing together separate sections of film to form a continuous whole.
Students will use various associated shots to tell a cohesive story without the need for dialogue in a scene.

Class will end with the third and final screening challenge! Students must film their own montage scene. A public challenge for filmmakers not taking the workshop will also be promoted via You Tube ahead of the screening on December 18.

*Students outside of the recommended age range, who are passionate about filmmaking and would like to participate in this workshop, are invited to send an email to secpa@fmcsd.ab.ca to request admission!
